Kayunga, Uganda – February 28, 2025 – The Kampala Audiology and Speech Centre, in collaboration with Med-El and other key stakeholders, hosted a dynamic and impactful event at Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital to commemorate World Hearing Day. The celebration was designed to raise awareness about hearing health while providing free hearing assessments and tests to members of the local community.

This year’s theme, “Changing Mindsets: Empower Yourself to Make Ear and Hearing Care a Reality for All,” highlighted the importance of challenging outdated perceptions and reducing the stigma associated with hearing loss. Through engaging demonstrations and informative sessions, attendees gained a deeper understanding of the significance of ear and hearing care, as well as the latest advancements in solutions for those experiencing hearing challenges.

One of the central features of the event was the provision of free hearing assessments. Over 100 individuals benefited from these tests, which were conducted by expert audiologists from the Kampala Audiology and Speech Centre. This initiative not only identified hearing issues but also connected participants with the necessary resources for further care.

Med-El, a leading innovator in hearing technology, showcased advanced hearing aids and cochlear implants, offering attendees a hands-on experience with state-of-the-art devices. This demonstration highlighted how modern technology can transform the lives of those with hearing difficulties, empowering them to lead more fulfilling lives.

The event also saw strong community engagement, with the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kayunga, Madam Mariam Seguya, in attendance. In her address, Madam Seguya emphasized the importance of regular hearing check-ups and seeking professional treatment for ear-related issues. She urged the community to avoid self-medication and instead consult ENT specialists for proper care. “As the doctors have emphasized, it is essential to get regular ear check-ups whether you feel fine or not. If you have an ear infection or any issues, consult an ENT specialist to receive proper treatment,” she stated.

The celebration was further enriched by the participation of the ENT department of Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital, the Mulago Ear, Nose, and Throat Students Association, and Biomedics Products Limited. Their contributions underscored the collaborative spirit of the event and the shared commitment to advancing hearing health.
